Reddall
DESCRIPTION
NameReddallDescriptionJohn Reddall arrived in Sydney aboard ‘Morley’, in 1820 with his parents, the Reverend Thomas and Isabella Reddall, and six brothers and sisters.
In 1828, he married Martha Wentworth, the daughter of Peterborough Estate (Shellharbour) owner D’Arcy Wentworth, and half-sister to explorer and politician William Charles Wentworth. Martha was about 15 years old, and John about 21.
On D'Arcy Wentworth's death in 1821, Martha inherited 1/5 of Wentworth's Peterborough estate, at Shellharbour.
John and Martha had their first child, Cornelia, in 1829. Sadly, she died a few weeks later. At the time they lived in the Minto area.
In 1830, John and Martha moved to Shellharbour to manage the ‘Peterborough Estate’, formerly granted to D’Arcy Wentworth, Martha’s father. The lived in what was later referred to on maps, as the ‘Old Peterborough Homestead’, which was located roughly near, what is now, the corner of Shellharbour and Lake Entrance Roads, Warilla.
Several convicts, male and female, were assigned to them on the Estate.
A son, George was born in 1831. He survived only 5 months. The following year, another son, Thomas Alexander Reddall, was born at Peterborough.
In 1835, John Reddall shot and killed Thomas Taylor, a master of one of the coastal traders visiting Peterborough. Taylor demanded tobacco and rum from Reddall, and caused a disturbance in his drunken state. Reddall stated it was an accident, and was acquitted. Shortly after this event, the Reddall’s moved off the Peterborough estate, and returned to Sydney.
The following year, in 1836, the Reddall’s portion of the Peterborough Estate was leased to George Watson.
John was active in trade between Sydney and India, and by 1827 had a 400-acre grant with permission to purchase a further 6000 acres in the Colony. However, he accrued many debts over the years, and by 1840, went bankrupt.
By 1844, John was confined in the mental asylum at Tarban Creek, Gladesville. He was described as violent and delusional.
His wife Martha, died in 1847 aged 34, but it is said that even before this, John’s mother, Isabella, cared for their surviving son, Thomas Alexander. John Reddall died at the asylum in 1855, aged 48.
Thomas Alexander Reddall inherited 2741 acres of his grandfather D’Arcy Wentworth’s original estate on his mother’s death. The area was north of Shellharbour Village.
In 1857, Thomas married Charlotte Osborne, daughter of Henry Osborne of Marshall Mount. The family lived at Captain Addison’s original home on the shore of Lake Illawarra near Mount Warrigal. Stephen Addison had also married one of D’Arcy Wentworth’s daughters and managed the Peterborough Estate for his father-in-law in the early 1800’s.
