NameBaxterDescriptionWilliam Baxter was born c.1810 living his early life in Snape, County Suffolk, England.
He was tried at the Suffolk Assizes, and transported to Australia in 1828, the ship 'Phoenix 2' for housebreaking.
In 1840 he married Mary Martin (daughter of Thomas and Sarah) at Jamberoo. The couple had six children;
William Thomas b.1849 (married Bideleina Macdonough, died 1917, Gosford)
James Joseph b.1851 (Catherine Leary, died 1926, Crookwell)
Sarah Ann b.1854 (married John Craig, died 1932, Shellharbour)
Teresa b.1856 (married Stephen Bishop, died 1945, Sydney)
Mary Elizabeth b.1858 (died 1858)
David James b.1859 (married Frances Farthing, died 1938, Field of Mars)
William Snr became attached to the seafaring life, commanding his own vessels and becoming a master mariner, opening up the shipping trade from Shellharbour. His ship, ‘William and Ann’ plied farm produce for the Sydney markets from Shellharbour, loading from the shore. In March 1856, William advertised he would run his ketch ‘William and Ann’ from Shellharbour to Sydney, ‘so long as wind and weather may permit’.
Captain William Baxter’s wife Mary died in 1876 from typhoid fever aged 53 years. William having developed cataracts, became blind and died in 1888 of natural causes leaving five children of a family of seven.
Both Mary and William were buried at the Old Sand Cemetery at Shellharbour.
Daughter, Sarah Baxter married John Craig in 1879. They had four children, Sarah Maud b.1879, Grace T b.1884, Albert J b.1886 and Mildred May b.1888 (died 1890). The Craig's remained at Shellharbour.
Sarah Maud Craig married John Ernest Reddall (son of Thomas Alexander Redall and Charlotte Osborne) in 1899.
