DescriptionTen years after the first Presbyterian Church (1866) was built in Tongarra Road, Albion Park, a Presbyterian cemetery was laid out some distance east of the church, now known as the Pioneer Cemetery in Russell Street Albion Park.

The first burial 1876, was that of Andrew McGill, a prominent pioneer of the Illawarra Shorthorn cattle breed.

The land title deeds (Reg No. 549 book 176) dated 1878, ‘on trust as a site for a Presbyterian Burial ground’ was dedicated, and many of the early Scottish settlers are buried there, the last burial being in 1969.

The Campbell Mercer Family plot at the Albion Park Presbyterian Pioneer Cemetery, appears to have been removed from the old foreshore cemetery in Shellharbour. Campbell Mercer of Mt. Terry, died in 1869, and his daughter Martha Mercer died 8th September 1851 aged 5 years, the inscription on the sandstone headstone as buried 11th September 1851. Martha could possibly have been the first burial at the old Shellharbour foreshore cemetery. The Mercer family farmed on their Mt. Terry property.

Buried in the McGill plot at the Albion Park Pioneer Cemetery, are the four children of Archibald and Margaret McGill who died during the local 1883 diphtheria epidemic, within 3 days of each death over 10 days, ages from 3 years to 8 years, and another child in 1889.
