NameMolesDescriptionWilliam Moles arrived to Australia in 1841 with his parents, Alexander and Jane, and sister Jane, when he was around 12 years of age.
His father, Alexander, settled on a clearing lease at Bass Point, in the area of Moles Lagoon which was later renamed Killalea Lagoon.
In 1852 William married Mary McGill the daughter of Andrew and Jean McGill. They settled on their farm at Tongarra until moving to Tullimbar.
William and Mary had nine children; Jane, Margaret, Alexandrina, Barbara, Marian, Louisa, Andrew, Mary, and Sarah Elizabeth.
Alexandrina died when she was just 28 years old in 1886.
Margaret (Maggie) married James Walker of Richmond River in 1902 and sadly died just three years later on a visit to her father's home 'Toongla', of a blood clot to the brain.
Louisa Moles married Andrew Paterson Johnston in 1900 and died only seven years later. They had a three year old daughter, Marian, born in Lismore in 1904.
Five years later, Andrew Paterson Johnston married Louisa's younger sister, Mary Moles at the Moles family home, 'Toongla'.
Sarah Elizabeth Moles suffered an affliction of the heart and sadly died when she was just 31 years of age of a cerebral haemorrhage, just like her elder sibling, Margaret.
Neither Jane, Barabara or Marian married. Andrew married Helen Fraser in 1898.
William Moles was an influential settler, Mayor of the Shellharbour Municipal Council 1860-1861 elected to replace William Wilson who left Shellharbour to further his Wesleyan Ministry. He was an alderman 1859-1863, 1866-1867 and committee member on the National School Macquarie River, movement for a Municipality in 1858 and improvement committee for Macquarie Pass.
In 1898 William purchased ‘Toongla’ the home built by Maurice Scanlon in 1886. Mary Moles died in 1900, and William in 1911.
Unmarried sisters Marian and Barbara, remained at 'Toongla'.
