NameMolesDescriptionAlexander Moles was born c.1803 in County Monaghan, Ireland to James and Elizabeth Moles (nee Thompson). He arrived in Australia aboard ‘Argyleshire’ in 1840 with his wife Jane (daughter of Douglas and Jane Dickson), son William, aged 11 years, and daughter Margaret Jane aged 9 years.
Alexander and family settled on a clearing lease at Bass Point, in the area of what is today Killalea Lagoon. When the Moles family lived there, it was called Moles Lagoon.
Alexander and Jane farmed the area for 20 years until Alexander’s death in 1860. Wife Jane died in 1872. They were buried at the Old Sand Cemetery at Shellharbour.
In 1852, William married Mary McGill the daughter of Andrew and Jean McGill. They settled on their farm at Tongarra until moving to Tullimbar.
William and Mary had nine children;

Alexandrina b.1858 (died 1886, aged 28 years, Albion Park)

Louisa b.1865 (married Andrew Paterson Johnston, died 1907, Albion Park)

Mary b.1868 (married Andrew Paterson Johnston, died 1952, Ashfield)
Sarah Elizabeth b.1870 (died 1901 Albion Park)
Louisa Moles married Andrew Paterson Johnston in 1900 and died only seven years later. They had a three-year-old daughter, Marian, born in Lismore in 1904.
Five years later, Andrew Paterson Johnston married Louisa's younger sister, Mary Moles at the Moles family home, 'Toongla', Tullimbar.
Sarah Elizabeth Moles suffered an affliction of the heart and sadly died of a cerebral haemorrhage in 1901, aged just 31 years.
Four years later in 1905, Sarah’s sister Margaret (Walker) also died of a blood clot to the brain on a visit to her father’s home ‘Toongla’.
Son, Andrew Moles married Helen Fraser in 1898.
Neither Jane, Barabara or Marian married. They loved in the family home ‘Toongla’ at Tullimbar, which their father William had purchased in 1898.
William Moles was an influential settler, Mayor of the Shellharbour Municipal Council 1860-1861 elected to replace William Wilson who left Shellharbour to further his Wesleyan Ministry. He was an alderman 1859-1863, 1866-1867 and committee member on the National School Macquarie River, movement for a Municipality in 1858 and improvement committee for Macquarie Pass.
Mary Moles Snr died in 1900, and William in 1911.
Alexander and Jane’s daughter, Margaret Jane Moles, married James Colley at Kiama in 1853.

Alexander John b.1855 ( married Charlotte Whittingham, died 1916, Kiama)
Jane Douglas b.1858 (died 1947 Kiama)
Matilda b.1859 (died 1944, Kiama)
James b.1861 (married Mabel Louise Scougall, died 1920, Lithgow)
William Moles b.1863 (married Evaline Nossiter, died 1924, Kiama)
Margaret Mary b.1865 (died 1945, Kiama)
Mary b.1867 (died 1940, Kiama)
Florence Ellen b.1869 (died 1869)
Margaret Jane Colley (nee Moles) died in 1869, aged just 37 years, probably a result of childbirth. She was buried at Kiama Cemetery. Four months later in June 1869, her infant daughter Florence Ellen was buried with her.
