In 1855, age 18 years, he arrived in Australia aboard ‘Hilton’, His shipping records list two aunts living at Sydney.

Maurice settled in Maitland after his arrival, and in 1868, married Elizabeth McDermott. Elizabeth was born Roscommon, Ireland to Terrence and Elizabeth McDermott. She had arrived in 1851 aboard 'Tippoo Saib', a 16 year old house servant. Both her parents were dead, and she had a sister, Maria, living int he colony.

Maurice and Elizabeth had two children;

Thomas Henry b.1860 (died 1915, Liverpool)
Mary Ann b.1871 (married Gabriel Timbs, died 1857, Albion Park)

In the early 1870’s the family moved to Albion Park, where they remained.

In 1873, Maurice purchased a portion of land originally granted to John Paul. In 1886, he built ‘Toongla’ situated on the Illawarra Highway, Tullimbar Lane Albion Park. Daughter, Mary Ann Scanlan married Gabriel Timbs Jnr the same year, and their wedding reception was held at ‘Toongla’.

In 1898, William Moles purchased the property. ‘Toongla’ was classified by the National Trust NSW in 1982.

Maurice’s wife, Elizabeth Scanlan died in 1903, and Maurice nine years later, in 1912.

Maurice’s parents and siblings must have come to Australia, as his father Thomas Scanlan died at Four Mile Creek, East Maitland in 1875. His obituary mentions one son and four daughters. Thomas’ death registration lists his parents as Thomas and Hannah.

Maurice’s mother, Mary, died at Maurice’s house at Albion Park, in 1891. Mary’s death registration lists her parents as Patrick and Julia.

Maurice was buried at Alboin Park Catholic Cemetery with his wife Elizabeth, mother Mary, and Aunt (Mary’s sister) Catherine Stroud.

Mary Ann Timbs (1870-1957).

Mary Ann Scanlan married Gabriel Timbs (the second) on the 2nd June, 1866 at St Paul's Catholic Church, Albion Park.
