DESCRIPTION
NameStapletonDescriptionJames and Catherine Stapleton, aged 37 and 35, came to Australia from Birr, Kings County, Ireland, aboard 'Nimroud' in 1859, with their three daughters -
Kate b.1847

The shipping records state that George Pallins sponsored the family. James' parents, Charles and Rebecca Stapleton were both dead. Catherine's parents, Benjamin and Margaret were also dead. The shipping records also state that James and Catherine’s son, ‘John Stapleton, and sister Rebecca were living in Sydney somewhere’.
Son, John Stapleton b. c.1842 arrived in Australia aged 16, aboard ‘Telegraph’ in 1858. His shipping records state that his sister Rebecca, was living in the colony.
John married Susan Deigan in Sydney in 1871. They had nine children -
Catherine b.1873 (died 1959, Albion Park)
James b.1875 (Married Edith Neaves, died 1931, Parramatta)
William b.1877 (died 1878, Jamberoo)

Thomas Burnett/Bernard (Bert) b.1882 (married Albina M O’Connell, died 1965, Albion Park)

James and Catherine’s daughter Rebecca Mary Stapleton married Daniel Madden in 1859, Sydney. She died Waverly 1906.
According to son John Stapleton’s obituary ‘The Kiama Independent 25 November 1914’, after arriving in Sydney, John went for a time to the gold diggings before settling at Jamberoo. He lived here for about eight years before moving to Albion Park where he remained.
In 1881, John and Susan Stapleton were charged with having brutally assaulted an apprentice, Anna Maria Davidson, from Randwick Asylum. John, when angry with her, seized her by the hair and shoved her into the burning hearth. Boiling water from the kettle poured over her head and shoulders. He held her there until she struggled and got away. Then he took a quince rod and beat her with it. That evening, Maria asked Mrs Stapleton for some whiting for the scalding blisters, but she was refused. Susan Stapleton told her to boil some wattle bark and apply it with rags, which she did. The following week, in much pain, she was beaten again for slow work. The following morning, she woke early and ran to the constable at Jamberoo. He recommended she return. Maria spent the night at the back of the Jamberoo Hotel before making her way to the police at Kiama. In court, Maria testified she had on two occasions been forced to strip to the waist and was lashed by a hide whip. Her clothes were dirty and she was never given wages. Susan Stapleton beat her as well and she was forced to work all day until bedtime. They Stapleton's were given the maximum penalty; a fine of ten pounds.
John Stapleton died at Albion Park in 1914, and Susan in 1930. They were buried at the Albion Park Catholic Cemetery.
According to an article in the ‘Illawarra Mercury Friday 21 January 1944’ John Stapleton Jnr (son of John and Susan) lived in the old home with his sisters Kate and Josie. It was 82 years since his grandfather (James Stapleton) purchased it, and 50 years since his father (John) came back from the goldfields to acquire it.
James Stapleton Snr died 1880 Waverly.
Catherine Snr died 1891 at Waverly.
