Richard aged 15, arrived in Australia from Tipperary, Ireland on 13th July 1860 aboard ‘Chance’ with his widowed mother Ann age 48, and siblings Mary age 23, and James age 18 and according to the records went to live in Kiama with a cousin.

He married Mary Stapleton in 1874, at Kiama. Mary was the daughter of James and Catherine Stapleton (nee Halpin) of Albion Park.

Richard and Mary had six children;

Thomas b.1876 (died 1945, Shellharbour)
James b.1877 (married Sarah Jane McInnes, died 1951, Shellharbour)
Mary Ann b.1879 (married George Manley, died 1929, St Leonards)
John Joseph b.1881 (married Ettie Kelly, died 1954, Shellharbour)
Catherine Theresa b.1883 (married William Rochford, died 1949, Shellharbour)
Michael b.1885 (died 1971, Shellharbour)
Johanna b.1888 (married Daniel James McLaren, died 1960, Sydney)
Sarah A b.1891 (married Joe L Hoyle, died 1969, North Ryde)
Robert Augustus b.1893 (died 1972, Shellharbour)

Richard and Mary lived at Shellharbour for 64 years, where Richard worked as a bootmaker and established one of the first businesses on Addison Street. He later farmed and operated a milk vendors business.

Richard died 16 May 1924, and Mary died eight days later on 24 May 1924. Her obituary reported. Mary died of shock following the death of her husband. They were both buried at Shellharbour General Cemetery.

Son, Michael Synnott had the old family cottage demolished and built a new cottage which was occupied by his widowed sister Catherine, and her three children. Upon his retirement as a schoolteacher, Michael returned and lived in the home until his death aged 85.the house was situated at 61 Addison Street Shellharbour.
