DESCRIPTION

NameTongarraTypeSuburbDescriptionTongarra is believed to be Dharawal word meaning ‘Place of the Cabbage Tree’.

This fertile land was used for dairy farming by Shellharbour’s earliest pioneers.

William Brownlee opened Tongarra Mine in 1893.

A school was opened in the 1870s on a 2 acre block of land on the Illawarra Highway, but the school closed in 1920 and later a home was built on the site.
