NameRussell, JohnOccupationFarmer, LandownerPlace of ResidenceStoney Creek, CroomBiographyJohn Russell son of Ebenezer Russell, was born in 1834 in Linlithgow in Scotland, and entered the Colony with his parents and then five sisters on the 'Portland' in 1840.
When he was 26 years of age, he bought farms at Terry’s Meadows and Johnston’s Meadows on the northern bank of the Macquarie Rivulet.
John inherited his father’s Croom/Croome Estate, and became the most prosperous man in the district, owning six other farms as well as town lots in Albion Park. John was an Alderman on Shellharbour Council 1869-1876. (Shellharbour Valuation Books 1876-1916).
John was a great benefactor to the town, having donated land for the Catholic Church Albion Park, money towards the building of the new Presbyterian Church Albion Park, donated land for the Presbyterian Manse, Albion Park Showground, and Albion Park Court House, and a beneficiary of the establishment of the Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery in Russell Street Albion Park 1876.
John bought 'Marshall Mount House' for his sister Elizabeth who had married George McDonald Snr. in 1871.
The township was once known as Russell Town. After the death of his father, John set up a Deed of Partition in 1876 as benefit to himself and six of his eight sisters.
The original part of his old house at the rear of the cottage, next to the present Village shopping centre driveway on Terry Street was destroyed by a fire in 2006.
John died in 1915 aged 81 years and was buried at Jamberoo in the family plot of St. Stephens Presbyterian Cemetery. The Russell family impressive granite marble headstone stands at the Cemetery behind the Jamberoo Presbyterian Church.
On 16th February 1916, the Russell Estate farms and township allotments were put to auction at Albion Park under instructions from the Administrator Malcolm Mathie Esq.
Ebenezer and Jane’s descendants, the Hamilton, McGill, Russell, Mathie and McDonald families, have carried on farming for many years in the district.
