Atchison
DESCRIPTION
NameAtchisonDescriptionSamuel Atchison was born in 1833, County Tyrone, Ireland to James Atchison and Mary Frances (Fanny) Caldwell.
Samuel arrived in Australia aboard the ‘Ebba Brahe' 16 January 1855, with his sister Margaret. The siblings already had relatives in the colony; their brother William and sister Susan had arrived in 1841 on the ship ‘Moffatt’ as Bounty Immigrants.
The immigration record for the ship ‘Ebba Brahe’ lists Margaret as a needlewoman and Samuel as a labourer, and they both could read only. In his book ‘One Hundred and Thirty-Years’, Stan Thomas describes Samuel as a very determined character.
On the old Peterborough Estate map (Shellharbour City Museum collection), between the years 1851-1859 it shows, Atchison as leasing land 52a 2r and 32 perches. It is presumed this Atchison in Samuel.
In 1866, Samuel married Clorinda Watson (nee Thomas), a widow.
Clorinda was the daughter of William Thomas and Sarah Waller born in Kent, England arriving in Australia with her parents and two siblings John and William on the ship ‘Westminster’ in 1838.
When Samuel married Clorinda, she already had three children to her second husband William Watson - Sarah Ann, Edmond and William.
Clorinda and Samuel had eight children –
