Clorinda came to Shellharbour with her parents, William and Sarah Thomas, who took up employment with Henry Osborne at Marshall Mount in 1838.

Private Samuel Atchison volunteered to serve with the NSW Infantry Unit in the Boer War, where he was Killed in Action 20 February 1900, aged 24.

Shortly after his death, the Shellharbour community initiated steps for a memorial to be erected near the harbour.

The 1900 monument, now located at Caroline Chisholm Park, is the oldest publicly erected war monument in Australia.
