James Jr was member of the Country Milk Suppliers Association and the local delegate and served on the committee of the Primary Producers Union. He was a staunch advocate for the rights of dairyman. James was a great debater, and took a keen interest in local government matters of which he possessed wide knowledge. He was described as ‘honesty personified, a careful guardian of the interests of rate payers and dairymen whom he so long represented’, ‘his word was his bond and there was never a need for any written guarantee for anything he undertook to do’.
His friend Hector Fraser said of James ‘As one who has watched closely the careers of our public men, I say the country would be the better for it if we had more men of the calibre of Alderman McNabb.’
