In 1841, John and his wife Bridget (nee McQuade) arrived in Australia aboard ‘Margaret’, with their children –

Ellen age 2 b.1839 (married James McNabb, died 1900, Albion Park)
John’s shipping records state he was the son of widow, Ellen McGettigan. Bridget was the daughter of Frank McQuade.
John and Bridget had more children in Australia, first in the Hunter Valley, and then at Shellharbour -
Mary b.1844 Maitland (married Michael Kenny, died 1903, Toolijooa)
Sarah McGettigan b.1845 (married Irvine Morris Martin, died 1914, Dunmore)
Bridget b.1848 Shellharbour (married Jacob Rubenach, died 1909, Sydney)
John and Barney McGettigan, farmers, are listed as signatories on the petition to form the Municipality of Shellharbour in 1859.
Bernard McGettigan eventually settled at St Helena near Byron Bay. His mother, Ellen, died at Shellharbour in 1861 and was buried at the old sand cemetery at Shellharbour.
John and Bridget’s daughter Ellen married James McNabb of ‘Seaview’, Dunmore. The couple were tenants of George Laurence Fuller and lived on his Dunmore estate. They had ten children, all raised on the family farm.

James McNabb died in 1889 and Ellen McNabb in 1900. Both were buried at the Albion Park Catholic Cemetery.
After their parents’ deaths, James, Bridget, Catherine and Sarah remained on the family farm ‘Seaview’, for the next 37 years.
James and Ellen’s daughter, Sarah McGettigan, married Irvine Morris Martin and lived at ‘Resthaven’ farm, Dunmore, just down the road from ‘Seaview’. Sarah and Irvine had eight children –
