Several walking trails offer panoramic views of Lake Illawarra, Macquarie Pass, Illawarra Escarpment and Saddleback Mountain.
There are extensive picnic, barbeque facilities, children's playgrounds, three tiers of terraced open spaces that enable outdoor activities, as well as an amphitheatre depicting Australian flora and fauna, open air stage with seating for outdoor concerts and a fitness circuit.
Parts of Blackbutt Reserve and surrounds were once farmed by the McNabb family.
Blackbutt Reserve was officially assigned 19 December 1986.
