NameHockeyDescriptionJohn Hockey was born 1803, Montacute, Somerset, England to Thomas Hockey and Mary Wetherell.
In 1824, John married Mary Lovell and they had three children –
Samuel b. 1824 (married Mary Anne Ryan, died 1905 Goulburn)
Enos b.1826 (married VIC Susan Rennick, died 1889, Nowra)
Charles b.1829 (died 1841, Somerset)
In 1830, John was convicted of stealing fowls and was transported to Australia aboard the 'Burrell'. His convict indent states John was married with two children.
His wife Mary Hockey died at Somerset five years later.
John married Mary Steel at Dapto in 1839 and they had –
Thomas b.1840 Albion Park (married Margaret Warrington, died 1916, Windellama)
James b.1841 Albion Park (married Eliza Hockey, died 1886, Cambewarra)
John b.1843 (married Mary Perkins, died 1930, QLD)
Dennis b.1847, Albion Park (married Frances Pearson, died 1927, Redfern)
Mary Hockey (nee Steel) died at Shellharbour in 1847.
John Hockey and his third wife Mary McGowan had –
Robert b.1845 Albion Park (married Margaret Temple, died 1923, Braidwood)
John’s eldest sons to Mary Lovell, Samuel and Enos, followed their father to Australia and settled here.
Samuel arrived in 1841 aboard the 'Portland'. He was 17 years old. Seven years later her married Mary Ann Ryan (daughter of Daniel Ryan and Mary Ann Knowland) at Dapto. The couple had many children;

Samuel and Alma Hockey
Samuel Hockey, the son of George Hockey, was a Fisheries Inspector, registered 24 May 1910, by the Board of Fisheries for New South Wales.
Samuel obtained a license as Coxswain of a Motor Boat by the Department of Navigation Sydney NSW 5th May 1915.
Letters of support for the appointment of a fisheries inspector were given by local community members, including one from Mr. J. D. Allen of Allen Bros General Store and Post Office.
Samuel Hockey married Alma Elana Anderson at Maclean NSW in 1911, and they lived at 'The Beaches' 4 Wilson Street, Shellharbour.
Albert and Martha Hockey
Albert and Martha Love Hockey (nee Patterson) purchased land at No.5 Wilson Street (sec 2B Pt. Lot 9). In 1924, with the help of George Brett, a local builder, they built the home, room by room as money became available.
Albert and Martha’s daughter Eileen Hockey, continued to live at No. 5 Wilson Street until her death on 30 November 1995, aged 87 years.
Herbert Hockey and Florence Hockey
Herb married Florence Maude Vaughan at Kiama in 1909. They had two children, Edna May b.1910, and Raymond Hedley b.1916.
The Hockey family became well-known fishermen in the area, and their descendants live in the Shellharbour today. Hockey Esplanade at Shellharbour Village was named in their honour.
