The Allen family ran Allen Bros Post Office and Store in Addison Street, Shellharbour Village. The family home, 'Karamia', was next door. 'Karamia' later became Tangs Chinese Restaurant.

Joseph married Annie Rachel Wickham in 1892 and they had four children, Keith Wickham, Kathleen (Kaleen) Lottie, Bruce Dunster and Gwendolen Morris.

When his father died in 1876, Joseph helped his mother run the store.

Joseph was first, according to the Government Gazette, appointed to the role of postmaster in 1879.

Another Gazette, in a notice from the Department of Lands, shows Joseph along with Edward Bigg, Charles Bursill involved with the Church of England portion in the Shellharbour Cemetery which had just been dedicated in 1895. Joseph continued to be involved in the Church of England until his death.

A Government Gazette (year not indicated) stated Joseph was the Stationmaster and an electronic telegraph we believe was on the premises in the store.

In 1887, Joseph Allen and John Conway were appointed the auditors for Shellharbour Municipal Council and again in 1889 continued in that role.

The Shellharbour Rifle Club was formed in 1898 and Joseph was the secretary.

The Dunmore Butter Factory held a picnic in G Couche's paddock to honour Joseph's services as secretary in 1895.

Children of Joseph and Rachael (as she was known) were:

Keith Wickham Allen b. 1893 (married Valmai Taylor, died 1972, Mossman)

Kathleen Lottie Allen b.1897 (died 1976, Castle Hill)

Bruce Dunster Allen bn. 1902 (married Peggy Greenwood, died 1991, Sydney)

Gwendolen Morris Allen b.1904 (married Frederick Hughes, died 1964)

Joseph died in 1946 aged 84 and was buried at Shellharbour.
