Yellow Rock (Ridge)

NameYellow Rock (Ridge)TypeSuburbDescriptionYellow Rock was primarily a dairy farming community and is named for the yellow sandstone cliffs of the Illawarra Escarpment.

The local Yellow Rock stone was used to construct many buildings in Albion Park, including the first Tullimbar School and Albion Park Church of England.

Yellow Rock Road extends to Stockyard Mountain where the Stockyard Mountain School 1884-1904 was situated on one acre of David Smiths grant.

Stockyard Mountain was so named, dur to the need for a stockyard for branding cattle, to prevent cattle stealing in the area.

Levi Raison settled at Yellow Rock Creek in 1854 and was involved with the Yellow Rock Dairy Co, one of the butter factories which preceded the Illawarra Cooperative Central Dairy factory at Albion Park Rail.

As of 1 March 2024, the Geographical Names Board of NSW (GNB) approved the proposal to rename the suburb of Yellow Rock to Yellow Rock Ridge.

Kiama and Shellharbour Councils held community consultation in early 2023 before endorsing the proposal in September 2023.

The renaming of the suburb, which is located in both Kiama and Shellharbour City Council LGAs, is to remedy the duplication of the suburb name Yellow Rock with another Yellow Rock in the Blue Mountains.

The community consultation results provided evidence that members of the Yellow Rock community had experienced confusion and difficulties with the name duplication with the majority supporting the name change.
