Levi was engaged in mining in his early years, before moving to Jamberoo where he worked for John Marks.
The family moved to Albion Park in 1854 and settled at Yellow Rock where Levi lived for 41 years.

Levi was instrumental in the formation of the Illawarra Central Dairy Factory and was for a time chairman of the Yellow Rock Dairy Company. He was an Alderman of Shellharbour Council from 1877-1889 and again from 1891-1894, including two terms as Mayor.
