DESCRIPTION
NameClarke, SamuelOccupationCarpenter, FarmerPlace of ResidenceYellow RockBiographySamuel Clarke arrived in the colony in 1827 aboard the 'Prince Regent'. He was born in London in 1812, the son of William and Hannah Clarke. In December 1826, when he was 15 years old, Samuel was sentenced for life for stealing. He was described as being 4’11 and had a tattoo on his hand in the shape of an ace of clubs.
He obtained his Ticket of Leave in 1835, and in 1839, married Rachel Prior at the school house, Wollongong . They had several children;
Benjamin b.1839 (married Mary Ann Swan, died 1888, Albion Park)
Samuel b.1843 (married Emma Wright, died 1914, Yellow Rock)
George 1845 (married Frances Louisa Corkhill Riley, died 1930, Bowral)
Elizabeth b.1847 (died 1852, Dapto)
Henry b.1849
Jane b.1850 (married John Fittler, died 1918, Wollongong)
Emma b.1851 (married Samuel Hazelton, died 1898, Ryde)
Sylvester b.1853 (died 1926, Dapto)
Elizabeth b.1855 (married George Seymour, died 1892
Rachel b.1857 (married John Abbott, died 1925, Sydney)
John William b.1859 (married Emma Prior, died 1921, Moss Vale)
Isabella b.1862 (married Arthur Gilroy, died 1930, Wollongong)
Samuel worked as a carpenter and builder for some years and built ‘Berkeley House’ for Mr. William Warren Jenkins. He carried out several important building contracts and built some of the oldest houses in Kiama and Wollongong.
Samuel settled at Yellow Rock where he bred fine dairy cattle. His slab homestead was on a rise above the 'Wairanga' property (owned by Samuel’s son Benjamin Clarke and later the Couch family) Yellow Rock Road.
The Steam Packet Hotel at Shellharbour Village was purchased by Samuel, as well as Grey’s Store at Albion Park, and he acquired extensive land holds at Stockyard Mountain, Shellharbour, and across the state.
Samuel’s wife Rachael died in 1879 aged 54 years. In the same year he married Ann Louise Bradney (nee Nichols) whose husband John (the son of convict John Bradney), had died in 1872. Ann was in her 30's at the time and Samuel was 67.
Samuel underwent a painful operation in later years on his throat which left his health rather weakened. In the last 12 months of his life, he was confined to his home on and off. His son Sylvester cared for him during his illness.
On his death at Albion Park in 1901, Samuel’s estate was valued at £7422, 10 shillings, and one pence. Samuel was buried at the Church of England cemetery at Albion Park.
