The hotel was on the south side of Addison Street between Wentworth and Wollongong Streets, Lot 11 Section 2, Village of Peterborough. (research LTO original deeds Tongarra Heritage Society Inc.)
Mercer leased the building to David Moon who obtained a Publican's License and opened the Steam Packet Hotel in April 1856.
The hotel, stables, outhouses, offices and yards were sold to Thomas Cosgrove in 1861 and was known locally as Cosgrove's Inn. The hotel was a centre for social life and public meetings, as well as a base for travellers.
James Condon owned the hotel from 1868 until the 1880s.
In the early 1900's it was owned by Dinah Hambly.
The hotel became Beazley's General Store, followed by the Gethings Store.
In December 1978, the Community Voice reported “Old House To Go” No. 11 Addison Street. The article described the building as derelict and complaints had been received it was a breeding ground for vermin. The remains of the historic Steam Packet Hotel were demolished and the site left vacant for many years.
