Thomas served as a Private with the 89th Regiment of Foot, from 1822-1830. The regiment was based in India.
In 1831, Thomas married Maria Blakely (daughter of George and Catherine). Ten years later they arrived in Australia aboard ‘Herald’ with their children –
John Joseph b.1831 (married Rosana O’Hara, died 1862, QLD)
James b.1833 (married Margaret Bruton, died 1902, Marrickville)
Thomas b.1835 (married Ellen Condon, died 1902, Kalgoorlie, WA)
Patrick b.1836 (died between 1841-1856, Shellharbour)
Thomas and Maria settled at Garden Hill (Wollongong) before moving to Shellharbour. They had several more children -
William Irving b.1842 (married Norah Hourigan, died 1917, Elizabeth Bay)
Ann b.1844 (married Patrick Downey, died 1927, Camberwell, VIC)
Samuel b.1846 (married Eliza O’Keefe)
Mary Jane b.1849 (married Joseph Guilfoyle, died 1918, VIC)
Thomas Cosgrove Snr died at Shellharbour in 1864 and was buried at the old sand cemetery. Maria died in1898 at Moama.
Son, Thomas Cosgrove Jnr married Ellen Condon (daughter of convict James Condon and Mary Murphy) in 1857 Thomas and Ellen had several children. The first nine were born at Shellharbour, and the youngest two at Berrima.

Mary Jane b.1870 (married Edwin Rudd, died 1958, Sydney)
Ellen Maude b.1873 (married James Keon, died 1934, Waverly)
Thomas Ambrose b.1876 (married Elizabeth Hassall, died 1938, Sydney)
Thomas Cosgrove Jnr operated the Steam Packet Hotel at Shellharbour, and served as an alderman for Shellharbour Municipal Council 1864-1870, and 1876-1879.
Thomas Cosgrove Jnr and his brother William Irving Cosgrove went to the Western Australia gold fields where they operated horse and cattle auctioneering business. It was here, Thomas Jnr died from a heart attack in 1902.
