George having been accused by one, John Larkins of stealing a cheque of £2.15s.9p.from his mail, was convicted in September 1871 for fraud, and sentenced to 3 years hard labor at Darlinghurst gaol.
The petition in support of Aitkin was signed by residents and businesses in the Shellharbour area including Kiama and Wollongong, and Southern Highlands areas.
