He was convicted of picking pockets and transported to NSW aboard ‘Morley’, arriving in 1828.

The Patriot (Dublin, Ireland) Tuesday July 31, 1827, stated that at Recorders' Court, the conviction was 'Michael Boylan, for stealing a handkerchief. To be transported for seven years'.

Michael married Margaret Bourke in 1842. Margaret was a convict too. She was caught stealing a coat and arrived 1839 aboard 'Minerva', when she was 14 years old. Her mother Catherine and brother Thomas had both been transported, prior to her arrival.

Margaret's Ticket of Leave 1844 stated she was 'allowed to remain in the service of Mr Ash, Sydney. Margaret's mother, Catherine Bourke, had married William Ash the same year.

Michael and Margaret had several children, the first few in Sydney and the rest in the Illawarra –

In the 1876-1885 Valuation Books, Michael Boylan owned and occupied a shop and dwelling at Shellharbour.
