It appears Gerald sponsored his wife to come to Australia. Mary arrived in Australia in 1860 on board the 'Alfred' with their four year old son, James. Mary's nephew Daniel Downey (born 1840, died Shellharbour 1904) is listed as arriving on the same ship.

Gerald and Mary eventually settled on GL Fuller's Dunmore Estate, where they took up farming.

Gerald died in 1878 and was buried at the old Sand Cemetery at Shellharbour.

Mary died in 1907 and was buried at the Shellharbour General Cemetery.
