His grandparents were James and Mary Fitzgerald (nee Downey). John was baptised (Joannes) 22 January 1854.

John arrived in Australia, aged 21, aboard the 'Nineveh' in 1877. His immigration records list his occupation as a blacksmith. He could read and write and had a brother, Gerald, living in the colony, though his location was unknown.

His brother Gerald's immigration records, state he was born c.1853, was 22 years old, he worked as a blacksmith, his parents were John and Ellen Fitzgerald, and he had an uncle, Gerald Fitzgerald, living at Shellharbour.

John's brother Gerald, married Bridget L'Estrange at Kangaroo Valley in 1879, and eventually moved to Uki, Tweed Shire, dying there in 1922.

John Fitzgerald worked as a blacksmith at Shellharbour, purchasing land opposite Shellharbour/Dunmore Railway Station to set up his farrier business.

John's sister Mary Fitzgerald Glenny (nee Fitzgerald) was widowed, and lived in the former Shellharbour Council Chambers in Addison Street, Shellharbour for many years.

Mary was born at Kildimo, Limerick in 1847, and baptised (Maria) 6 August 1847. Her parents were listed as Joannis Fitzgerald and Helena McMahon.

In Mary's Will and Testament, she left money to her cousins, Anne, Patrick and Margaret, and her sister, Ellen Murry in Subiaco. She also left money to Dennis Kelleher and Alexander Rogan of Shellharbour 'in memory of past kindness to a lonely women'.

John died 27 Feb 1911, aged 55 years. His sister Mary, died December 1927, aged 79 years. Both were buried at the Shellharbour General Cemetery.
