John arrived in Australia, aged 21, aboard the 'Nineveh' in 1877. His immigration records list his occupation as a blacksmith. He could read and write and had a brother, Gerald, living in the colony.
Gerald's immigration records state that when he arrived in Australia aboard the 'Surry' in 1875, he had a uncle, Gerald, living at Shellharbour.
John worked as a blacksmith at Shellharbour, purchasing land opposite Shellharbour/Dunmore Railway Station to set up his farrier business.
John's sister Mary Glenny (nee Fitzgerald) was widowed, and for many years lived in the former Shellharbour Council Chambers in Addison Street, Shellharbour for many years. She was born in Limerick in 1847, and reputedly came to Shellharbour, from New Zealand.
John and sister Mary are both buried at the Shellharbour General Cemetery.
