In 1818, James married Frances Farmer. Two years later he was arrested and sentenced to 14 years transportation abord ‘Speke’, for treason. James' friend William Clarkson was transported on the same ship for the same offence.
James was in a relationship with Elizabeth (Eliza) Kenny whom he married in 1838. Eliza was born 1804 in Dublin and had arrived aboard ‘Elizabeth’ in 1827, sentenced to seven years for stealing clothes.
James and Eliza were based in Sydney and had several children together, marrying in 1838 –
Margaret Elizabeth b.1831 (married James Belcher, died 1913, Sydney)
Mary b.1832
Catherine b.1834 (married William Stewart, died 1911, Shellharbour)
John Duncan b.1837 (married Maria Jane Gee, died 1900, Sydney)
James b.1839 (married Mary Fowler, died 1926, Albion Park)
Peter b.1842 (married Sarah Fowler, died 1927, Wyong)
Thomas Alfred b.1844 (married Rebecca Thomson, died 1938, Sydney)
James' friend William Clarkson was living in the Illawarra, at Dapto. Some of the Wright children also moved to the Illawarra.
James and Eliza’s daughter Catherine Wright, married convict William Stewart who was sentenced to seven years for stealing flax and arrived in Australia aboard ‘Hashemy’ in 1849. William Clarkson was a witness at their marriage. The couple farmed at Stoney Creek/Terragong, and after William’s death in 1879, Catherine and sons continued there for many years, before Catherine moved to Shellharbour Village.
James and Eliza Wright’s sons, James and Peter married sisters, Mary and Sarah, daughters of Henry Fowler and Ann Gagging, of Albion Park. Henry Fowler’s father, Henry Fowler Snr had been transported to Australia for seven years aboard ‘Marquis of Hastings’ in 1826.
James and Mary Wright lived in Albion Park and had several children, many of whom never married. A son William, married Marion Isabella McGill (daughter of James McGill and Isabella Russell).
Peter and Sarah Wright’s daughter Amy, married John Walker of Albion Park. Another daughter Ann, married Ernest James Fredericks.
