Patrick Courtney died in Ireland c.1869, aged just 38 years. Mary was left with eight children to care for.

The family emigrated to Australia over a period of several years.

Daughter, Johanna was sponsored to come to Australia in 1882 aged 18 years, by Thomas Courtney who lived in the Shoalhaven. She arrived aboard the ‘Cardigan Castle’ in August 1883, and was listed as a housemaid.

Johanna’s brother William Layne Courtney arrived next in February 1885 aboard the ‘Gulf of Venice’. He was listed as 20 years old, a farm labourer and as having a sister in Broughton Vale.

Johanna and William’s sisters, Mary Theresa and Honora Courtney came to Australia next, as unassisted passengers, also in 1885, aged 18 and 22 years.

The following year, in 1886, their widowed mother Mary Courtney (nee Lane) aged 37, and children Catherine 17, Ellen 16, Ann 15, Honorah (Patrick Courtney’s niece) 8, and John 18, were also sponsored by Thomas Courtney of Broughton Creek, Shoalhaven to come to Australia. They all arrived in Australia in April 1886, aboard the ‘Aberdeen’.

Honorah Courtney (Patrick’s niece), who emigrated with her Aunt Mary and cousins, later married John Hambly of Dunmore, and they named their farm ‘Glanworth’.

Johanna Courtney married Martin Creagan in 1886 at Shellharbour. They farmed 'Anglesboro' at Dunmore.

Mary Theresa Courtney married William Henry Jones at Kiama in 1891.

Anne 'Annie' Courtney married Thomas Hannon 1896, Sydney. The Hannan's lived at 'Kildorrery' Homestead, Leichardt, Sydney
