OccupationSurveyorPlace of ResidenceShellharbour VillageBiographyEdward Haslam Thomas was born in 1864 at Shellharbour, the son of John Thomas and Maria Haslam.

His father John, was the son of William and Sarah Thomas, who arrived int he area from Kent England in 1838, to work on the Osborne Estate at Marshall Mount.

Edward's mother Maria, was the daughter of William Makin Haslam and convict, Catherine Allison who was transported from Glasgow for stealing aboard the 'Louisa', aged 19 years. Maria's grandfather Samuel Haslam was also a convict, transported from England aboard the 'Barwell' in 1797.

After leaving school, Edward Haslam Thomas trained as a surveyor, eventually receiving his survey certificate and working as a mining surveyor.

Edward served in the armed forces during the Boer War in South Africa, with the rank of Captain. While he was there, he developed a great love for South Africa and made several trips to the country in later years.

In 1928, when Edward was 59, he married Mary 'Hope' Curtis aged 20. They had one daughter Diana, who became a nursing sister. The family lived at 'The Sheiling' Shellharbour Village, which still stands today.

Edward died in 1947, Hope remarried Vivian Graham Thompson in 1955.
