James was tragically killed when he was 42 years old, when he was knocked down by a train at Burwood Railway Station in 1893. James had been visiting his friend Mr Wilkinson and was on his way home when he saw the train and thought he may miss it. James tried to take a short cut and crossed the line near the station. In his hurry he failed to notice the approach of the train from Campbelltown which struck him with a great force.
At the time of his death he was engaged to Bessie Lavender.
Charlotte Dunster married Walter Allen in 1861 and they operated Allen Bros Post Office and Store at Shellharbour.
James' estate was divided between his step siblings, the Allens, who James was very fond of - Joseph Dunster Allen, George Allen, Edward Allen, Charlotte Allen and Adelaide Jane Allen.
