NameEast DescriptionThomas East was born in 1816 in Buckinghamshire to Richard and Mary East. In 1838, he married Elizabeth Lacey at Lambeth.

Thomas and Elizabeth migrated to Australia in 1841, on board the 'Earl Grey'. An outbreak of measles occurred on the voyage and their two daughters, Mary and Sarah, died, aged three and one.

Upon their arrival in Kiama, Thomas and Elizabeth settled at the Waughope Estate at Jamberoo and while here had four children;

Eliza b.1843 (married Joseph East, died 1917, Kangaroo Mountain)
Emma b.1845 (married William Wentworth East, died 1896, Jamberoo)
Richard b.1848 (married Lucy Entwistle Watkin, died 1921, Mosman)
James b.1850 (married Eliza Elliott, died 1927, Wollongong)

In 1852, Thomas purchased 'Prospect', part of an original grant of 500 acres promised to Andrew Byrne. 'Prospect' is now the East’s Beach Holiday area at Kiama. At 'Prospect' more children were born;

Son, James East was an alderman of Shellharbour Council from 1895-1917, and served as mayor from 1905-1907. James and Eliza East had six children –

Charles b.1886 (married Maude Elizabeth Whitfield, died 1958, Wollongong)

James and Eliza first farmed at ‘Bush Bank’, Kiama before moving to ‘Sea View’ farm on Shipman’s Hill, today part of the Flinders estate.

Thomas and Elizabeth’s son, John East married Elizabeth Jarman in 1875. The farmed 'Ellerslie' at Dunmore. John and Elizabeth had a family of nine children, five boys and four girls, all raised on the farm. One son, Wentworth Lincoln East, died in 1917 at Belgium, during WWI.

Thomas and Elizabeth’s son, Alfred Thomas married Katie Gardiner and had eight children before her death in 1900. Their son, Augustus Milton East, died in 1918, killed in action in France. Alfred then married Jane Whittaker had another seven children. The family farmed at ‘Beaulieu’ farm, Bass Point.
