In 1874, he married Eliza Elliott (daughter of James and Jane). The couple had several children;

Anne Maud b.1877 (married Edward Kell Tate, died 1973, Jamberoo)
Stanley Elliott b.1879 (married Robina Crawford Gaudion, died 1924)
Daisy Mildred b.1881(married Harold Bissell, died 1949, Wollongong)
Mimie Isabel b.1883 (married John Alfred Johnston, died 1968, Thirroul)
Charles Lacey b.1886 (married Maude Elizabeth Whitfield, died 1958, Wollongong)

James East was an Alderman of Shellharbour Council from 1895-1917 and served as Mayor from 1905-1907. The family farmed mostly at 'Sea View' Shellharbour.

Their son, James ‘Russell’ East and wife Charity, had two children, Irene Constance, and Clifford Russell East. Clifford’s son, Russell, was a well-known builder in Shellharbour and lived in Mary Street.

Daughter, Mimie East married John Johnston of 'Marks Villa', Albion Park. They had three boys, Lindsay, Clive and Garnet ‘Garnie’ Hedley James. During the Second World War, their farm was resumed for the building of the airstrip and they almost went bankrupt. Their home was transported 2 kilometres to the west, behind ‘Ravensthorpe’, however, they lost valuable farming land.

James died in 1927 and Eliza in 1938, and they were buried at Wollongong Cemetery.
