NameBadansDescriptionJohn Badans was born at Poplar, Tower Hamlets, London, 11 August 1817.
His were parents, Alexander and Elizabeth (nee Soaper). Friends of the family contributed money so that John could attend Greenwich Naval College, and he became a mariner.
John was a chief officer on board the 'Oriental' which transported English emigrants to New Zealand.
On one of the voyages, John met William and Sophia Watts (nee Buss) and their children. On arrival at Port Nicholson, New Zealand, John jumped ship and married the Watts' daughter, Anne.
John and Anne left New Zealand with their three sons, William, James and Robert on the ship 'Comet', arriving in Sydney in 1849.
John then joined the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and stayed with the company for several years. He then went to the Victoria gold fields where he was quite successful.
The Watts' lived at Robb's farm, Spring Hill, Jamberoo, where William was employed. John and Anne purchased 100 acres in the Minnamurra Falls Valley, Jamberoo, and established a dairy farm.
Ann and John had eleven children.
William bn. 1843 Wellington New Zealand. Married Rhoda Ward.
James bn. 1846 in Wellington New Zealand.
Robert bn. 1847 New Zealand. Married Emma Jane Porter.
Alexander John bn. 1850 Jamberoo. Married Sarah Ann Jones and they eventually moved to Ebenezer Russell's original property at Croom.
Edward bn. 1852 Jamberoo. Married Mary Jane Knight.
Ann Martina bn. 1855 Jamberoo. Married William Laves.
Lucy Cecilia b.1857. Married William Thomas McGrath.
Sarah Ann bn 1860 Jamberoo. Married James Missingham, who operated Missingham's Tannery in Albion Park.
Clara Jane bn. 1862 Jamberoo. (Died 1894).
Sophia Mary bn. 1864 Jamberoo. Married James McGrath.
Martin Walter bn. 1868 Jamberoo. Married Mary Ellen Ada McCarthy.
In the 1891 Census, William Watts and family were living at 'Rough Gully' in the district of Kiama, North Ward.
John Badans was a skilled carpenter. He made beautiful cedar furniture and built many slab houses for families in the area.
