In 1847, aged 23, Thomas was convicted of sheep stealing at the Warwickshire Assizes and sentenced to seven years transportation.
Thomas left for Australia aboard ‘Hashemy’, in December 1848. Four year later he married Nancy Whittaker (daughter of John and Eleanor), at Wollongong.
