In 1855 he arrived in Sydney aboard ‘Charles Ross’, with his parents and sister. The family soon left for Queensland to meet Barbara’s brother, Nicolas Hoffman. Only 12 months later Barbara died there. Conrad’ was left in the care of his uncle, and his father and sister returned to Bavaria. Conrad was 14 years old.
Sometime in the early 1860’s, Conrad came to the Illawarra. He set up the first butcher shop at Dapto in 1862. The Dapto Senior Citizens Centre was later built on the site, and named Heininger Hall/House in the family’s honour.
Two years later, in 1864, he married Margaret Howes at Wollongong.
Margaret was born 1843 Dapto to John and Bridget Howes (nee Burke). John, from Suffolk, had been transported to Australia for life, in 1817, aboard ‘Larkins’. He was assigned to work on the Johnston’s Meadows Estate at Albion Park, where he remained. John was probably buried at the old sand cemetery at Shellharbour in 1854.
Conrad and Margaret had ten children -

Martha b.1868 (married Joseph Vining, died 1942, Dapto)
John b.1870 (married Hanah/Horatia Hoskins. Lived with housekeeper Lillian Maud Becker, died 1936, Corrimal)
Charles Albert b.1872 (married Mary Madden, died 1929, Wollongong)
Conrad John b.1874 (married Ellen Fitzgerald, died 1957, Dapto)
Julia Margaret b.1876 (died 18777, Dapto)
Bridget Isabel (Isabella Bridget) b.1879 (married James Vereker, died 1932, Wollongong)
Joseph Aloysius b. 1881 (married Elizabeth Jane Frank, died 1955, Albion Park)
David b. 1883 (died 1934, Albion Park)
The family lived at Marshall Mount/Calderwood. Conrad also owned 80 acres at Tongarra/Macquarie Pass, named ‘Mount Misery’. This farm was later owned by the Erskine family and was burnt out in the 1909 bushfires.
In 1867 Conrad Snr received a certificate of naturalisation. He was 25 years old at the time, residing at Dapto, and working as a butcher.
Conrad served as an alderman on Shellharbour Municipal Council for almost ten years, from 1893 to 1902.
Conrad died from stomach cancer 6 March 1906 at Dapto, and was buried at the Albion Park Catholic Cemetery. He was 63 years old. Margaret Heininger died in 1919.
