James and Elizabeth reputedly came to Australia in 1828, aboard ‘North Britain’ with their son, John, and Elizabeth’s brother William Charles. Another of Elizabeth’s brothers was Captain Samuel Charles of Kiama.
After a few years in Sydney, where James worked as a baker and publican, the family, which by then included more children, settled at Jamberoo.
James purchased land on at Terragong in 1831 and built the family’s first home; a simple timber cottage named ‘Figtree Cottage’. James acquired adjoining land by transfer of a grant for debts owning, and a new home, ‘Terragong Cottage’ was built here in 1843.
In 1858, James’ son, John Marks, built a grand Colonial Georgian two-story home in front of ‘Terragong Cottage’, known as ‘Terragong House’. Six generations of the Marks family lived at ‘Terragong House’. In 1876, John moved to Sydney to further his political career, and leased ‘Terragong House’ to his brother, Samuel who ran it as a dairy farm for 30 years. Samuel’s son, Ernest John Marks, eventually bought the property from his aunt for 1000 pounds.
Samuel Marks and family lived at Terry’s Meadows (Albion Park), prior to the move to ‘Terragong House’. They lived at ‘Wanalama’ farm; home of today’s Shellharbour Airport. The home was in Mark’s Lane, which once ran through the centre of the Airport land, joining Tongarra Road with the Illawarra Highway. Samuel and family lived at Albion Park for 14 years.
He and wife, Clara Kezia Bedford Uther, had five children –

Ida Elizabeth b.1863 (married Henry King, died 1951, Manly)
Annie Uther b.1867 (married Caleb Terrey, died 1957, Sydney)
Clara Lillian b.1869 (married Frederick Kendall, died 1948, WA)
Maud Evelyn b.1877 (married Hedley E Fox, died 1962, Chatswood)
Elizabeth Marks died in 1863. James Marks Snr died in 1872 at ‘Culwalla’, the residence of his son, James Jnr, at Jamberoo.
Samuel Marks died in 1908 at was buried at Kiama Cemetery. His wife Clara, died in 1924.
