According to family descendants, Robert Alcorn and his wife Margaret (Carson) arrived at Melbourne in 1857, aboard the ‘Pedestrian’ (however no shipping records have been located). Robert's brother Joseph, his wife Ellen, and their 7 children accompanied Robert.
Robert and Joseph's parents are believed to be Andrew and Margaret (McCormack)
After arriving in Melbourne, they boarded a coastal ship called the ‘City of Sydney’ and sailed for Sydney. The families then went by coastal steamer either 'the Kiama' or ' Illawarra' to the Illawarra.
Joseph and family settled at Dapto while Robert came to Shellharbour.
Robert and family leased a farm, and in 1859 Robert signed a petition to form a Municipal Council in Shellharbour.
In 1861, due to the Crowns Alienation Act, Robert decided to buy land at Kangaloon and left Shellharbour to reside there.
Robert and Margaret Alcorn had four children;
Andrew Carson b.1840 (married Isabella Thompson and Letitia Alcorn, died 1906)
James b.1842 (married Isabella Grant Thompson, died 1918, Moss Vale)
Elizabeth Margaret (Lizzie) b.1847
Robert b.1850 (married Ellen Alcorn, died 1917, Petersham)
