NameMinnamurra School and Teachers ResidenceTypeBuildingSchoolResidenceDescriptionMinnamurra School was officially opened in 1883. The new school replaced the Peterborough School which was in a dilapidated condition on the opposite side of Swamp Road. It was built on two acres of land given by George Laurence Fuller, of Dunmore House and in use until 1907, when the 21 children from Dunmore and Minnamurra were transferred to Shellharbour Public School.
The former schoolhouse and teachers’ residence, both built of local basalt rubble are one of the oldest examples of public school buildings in Shellharbour and have been lovingly restored by the owners.
A former resident of the schoolhouse Timothy Ryan, was accidently killed while testing the Owen Gun at Lysaghts, Port Kembla in June 1942. Timothy was a target spotter at Lysaghts factory and was shot during a reload of the gun while marking the target. It was his first day at work after leaving school and he was just 17 years old.
