Robert was admitted as an attorney in 1820, and in 1824 married Jessie Moncrieff Thriepland, daughter of Lord Moncrieff of Fingask Castle, Perth, Scotland

In the 1840's Robert and his two sons arrived in Australia and two years later he was working as a solicitor for the Supreme Court of NSW.
In 1841, he purchased 'Sarah's Valley' at Jamberoo. Over the years he purchased more land in the Illawarra.
Robert spent much time in Sydney; however, his home was in Market Square in Wollongong, where he lived on his retirement in the 1860’s.
Robert's son Percy married Eleanor Martha Haylock and they had seven children;

Percy and Eleanor's son Ernest William Owen married Constance Elaine McMillan in 1910. Constance was the daughter of Sir William McMillan and Ada Charlotte Graham.

William and Constance had a summer home at Tongarra ‘River Farm’.
Evelyn Ernest Owen was the famous inventor of the Owen Gun, that saved so many Australian lives during WWII and subsequent conflicts.
Evelyn turned parts for the prototype of his gun at Brewster’s Garage at Albion Park. He purchased a sawmill at Tongarra on the expectation of royalties from his invention, however, he was taxed heavily. Evelyn died in 1949, age 33.
