DESCRIPTION
NameRoartyDescriptionEdward Roarty was born 1835, County Donegal, Ireland to Hugh and Bridget Roarty.
It is believed Edward arrived in Australia aged 22 years in 1861, aboard the ‘Nile’. His occupation was listed as shepherd (this is the only shipping record located).
Edward’s first job in the colony was hauling logs to assist with building the second stage of Parramatta Gaol,
Edward married Mary Dillon at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. Mary was from County Clare and had arrived in Australia about 1863.
The Roarty’s reputedly moved to Kiama where Edward worked as a builder and handyman for Mr Charles Cameron.
Edward and Mary then moved to Dunmore, where they took up farming on a leasehold from George Laurence Fuller. Edward also worked for GL Fuller, and helped in the building of the Fuller family home, Dunmore House. He assisted Mr Simmons who had the contract for building the Jamberoo Public School and Church of England.
Their farm in Rocklow Road, Dunmore, ‘Donclare’ was named after County Donegal and County Clare. It stood on the north side of Rocklow Road, in between 'Mayfield' and 'Anglesboro' farms. This is where the family remained; Edward living there for over 50 years until his death in 1925.
Edward and Mary had six children;
Rose b.1867 (married John McEncroe, died 1957, Wollongong)
Sarah b.1869 (married John Marley, died 1942, Kiama)
Bridget Blanche b.1871 (married Frederick Boyns, died 1932, Sydney)
Anne b.1873 (died 1958, Shellharbour)
Mary b.1875 (married Daniel Kenny, died 1958)
Edward b.1877 (married Mary Ellen McFadden Hopkins, died 1928, Queensland)
Rose Roarty married John McEncroe and farmed at Rocklow, Dunmore. Rose was widowed early in her life with four children under six, when her husband John was accidentally killed after being thrown from his horse at Minnamurra.
