NameKnightDescriptionGeorge Knight was born in 1806 at Sussex England. He married Mary Ann Bassett in 1826 and they had six children of which only four survived, Joseph b.1827, Sarah b.1830, Emily b.1834, George b.1839, Elizabeth b.1840 (died 1840), Harriet b.1841 (died 1841).
Mary Ann died in 1841 and in 1842 George married a widow Rebecca Gregory (nee Dearling) who had two of her own children, Eliza b.1838 and William b.1840.
The family migrated to NSW aboard the 'Neptune', in 1844. When they arrived at the port, reputedly, Shellharbour land owner Robert Towns, walked alongside the ship and called up to the new arrivals. He was looking for carpenters to work on his Peterborough Estate at Shellharbour. George and son Joseph Knight offered their services.
Rebecca Knight worked as a nurse and she would have been much valued in the newly established estate.
George and Joseph were employed to built a store shed, a schoolhouse and a home for the teacher at Shellharbour.
17 March 1844 the first child of George and Rebecca, John, was born at Shellharbour. The couple had several more children, Thomas b.1846, Alfred b.1848, Franklin b, 1849, Felix b.1851, Edwin b.1853, Walter b.1855, Rhoda b.1857, Lydia b.1859, David b. 1861, and George b.1862.
Between 1846 and 1855 George worked as a carpenter at Jamberoo.
The family moved to Bulli after financial difficulties and in 1863 Rebecca sadly died. George remarried twice.
Son, Joseph Knight married Elizabeth Dorrough. Elizabeth was the daughter of Matthew and Martha Dorrough, who had also come to the area as part of Captain Towns settlement scheme.
The Dorrough’s were one of the 23 families who came to Shellharbour with Caroline Chisholm in 1843 to work on the Peterborough Estate, as part of Town’s scheme.
