NameArthurDescriptionJohn Arthur was born 1808, Antrim, Northern Ireland, to John and Margaret Arthur.

In 1838, John arrived in Australia aboard ‘Mandarin’ with his two young daughters, Anne 8 and Margaret 4. A daughter Mary, aged 6 moths died on the voyage. His wife Elizabeth (nee Young) also died on the voyage.

John then married Margaret Collins (nee Dorrough) in 1844, Sydney.

Margaret was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Dorrough (nee Donaghy), and the sister of Matthew Dorrough who with his wife Martha Jane and children, settled at Shellharbour in 1843 as part of Caroline Chisholm’s settlement scheme. Margaret arrived in Australia aboard ‘Broom’, with her brother Matthew in 1842. She married James Collins in 1843, but he died the same year.

After their marriage they moved to the Monaro district for a few years before moving to Shellharbour about 1850. The family stayed at Shellharbour for about 10 years before moving to Jamberoo, and then on to Kangaloon, where Margaret’s brother Matthew and family lived.

In the early 1880’s the family again relocated north to the Richmond River at a place later called Dorroughby.

John Arthur Snr died at ‘Glenmore’, Lismore in 1887. Margaret Arthur died in 1907, aged 93, at Lismore.
