Nell’s recollections Activities and Associations
City of Shellharbour War Widows
Four years ago (2005) 20 War Widows formed the City of Shellharbour War Widows. The organisation meet once a month socially…with morning tea and a happy get-together which lasts from 10 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Tea and coffee with sandwiches and cakes makes the day a happy one…or a bus trip from 9a.m. to 2.30 p.m. We celebrate each ones birthday with cake and candles. April 25th 2009, one of our ladies, Marie McKenzie of Shellharbour celebrated her 90th Birthday. We march on ANZAC Day and support the R.S.L. Club selling poppies and biscuits…Also Albion Park R.S.L. Women’s Auxiliary. We do not have Office Bearers, just a Social War Widows and help each other in anything required and I handle the correspondence, and currently president.
Aged and Peoples Welfare
APW was Commenced in May 1968 with a sponsored walk from Albion Park to Shellharbour, to raise funds for the project with Shellharbour Council involved and with the late Mr. Brian Stubbs-Health Dept, and the late Alderman Peter Hodsdon. Mr. Ian Hatfield was treasurer for 25 years. During that period, the name changed to Shellharbour and District Meals on Wheels.
The late Mr. Albert Neate, business man, with his wife May who is now 92 and lives in Warrigal Care Albion Park, with myself elected President for over 30 years, cooking was done in our own homes. Throughout the area first delivery was five meals soon to extend to over 60 per day, four days a week.
Shellharbour Worker’s Club donated Thursday’s meals for more than 25 years. We had several venues of cooking meals, all volunteers at the S.E.S. kitchen. Soon that was too small and permission was given to use the upstairs kitchen in the Centenary Hall, until with heavy Eskies carrying the food down stairs, became a problem. Council again gave permission to use the main kitchen in the Centenary Hall and here we remained till the Shellharbour Meals On Wheels was taken over by another company.
The late Mrs. Joyce Parton, cooked in her home in Warilla for 30 years with a couple of her neighbours. Her husband Ron, would come and pick up meat and veggies and the weekly supply of oranges for Vitamin C.
We supported our community when the 24 bed nursing home up at Native Dog Hill Mt. Warrigal needed support, we of Meals On Wheels donated $500. I then organised a fete among all Churches and Sporting Clubs to raise necessary funds to get everyone back on track and the Joan Pearce Care at Mt. Warrigal became a reality and Warrigal Care continues. With the closing of Meals on Wheels, I asked permission to give a thank you to the volunteers. I hired 3 Doherty Coaches and had a Harbour Cruise and Concert for almost 200 people which cost $12,000.
My Volunteers deserved the Best.
