In an 1856 deposit journal for Australian immigrants, Matthew is listed as being 38 years old, along with his wife Johanna 35 years, and son John 12 years. Their ages are incorrect.

On the 1857 immigration passenger list for the 'Glen Isla', Matthews age is listed as 46 years, Johanna's 55 years, and John's 17 years. The family was sponsored by Andrew Brodie of Dapto or Peterborough (Shellharbour), who was his son-in-law. Matthew's parents are listed as John and Bridget, both dead.

Matthew and Johanna's daughter Mary, had married Andrew Brodie in Ireland in 1854, and the couple had emigrated to Australia.

Matthew and Johanna's other daughter Bridget, aged 22 years, arrived on the same ship as her parents, along with her husband Timothy McKinnery (listed Kannary), and their children Patrick 3 years, Johanna 1 year, and Honorah (months). Bridget and Timothy farmed near Bass Point at Shellharbour, and had several more children, Mary Teresa b.1860, Matthew b.1864, Ellen b.1865, Catherine Agnes b.1867, Timothy b.1872 and Edward b.1874.

Another daughter Hannorah also came to Australia. she married Edward Byron at Shellharbour in 1857.

John Carroll married Margaret Kirby in 1861. The couple had several children, Johanna b.1861 (Raftery), Matthew Luke Carroll b.1863, Mary b.1865 and Bridget b.1868.

Matthew Luke Carroll married Theresa Ellen Timbs and they lived at Albion Park, where Matt worked as a blacksmith.
