NameBatemanDescriptionArthur Wigley Bateman was born in England 18 October 1844. He travelled to many countries through his work including Australia, Germany, Stockholm, South Africa, and India.
The Bateman’s eventually settled at Albion Park where Arthur became a physician based in the town.
His surgery adjoined the family residence 'Ravensthorpe' (Tongarra Road), built for the family in 1893.
Arthur served as local physician and medicine man for six years, until his early death at just 54, in 1899. He was buried at All Saints Church of England at Albion Park.
Arthur and his wife Anna had 11 children. Their eldest daughter Mary, married John Raftery and they lived for a time at the Commercial Hotel at Albion Park, which was owned and operated by the Raftery family.
John and Mary purchased 'Ravensthorpe' from Mary’s parents c.1920, and lived there with their family until the home was sold in 1967.
The Bateman and Raftery families have 6th generation descendants living in Albion Park today.
