Arthur served as local physician and medicine man for six years, until his early death at just 54, in 1899. He was buried at All Saints Church of England at Albion Park.
Arthur and his wife Anna Louisa Kennedy had 11 children.

Arthur Wigley Bateman died suddenly aged 52 in 1899 at his home 'Ravensthorpe'.
Their eldest daughter Mary, married John Raftery and they lived for a time at the Commercial Hotel at Albion Park, which was owned and operated by the Raftery family.
John and Mary purchased 'Ravensthorpe' from Mary’s parents c.1920, and lived there with their family until the home was sold in 1967.
The Bateman and Raftery families have 6th generation descendants living in Albion Park today.
