NameBateman, Thomas ArthurDate of Birth1883Date of Death1960BiographyThomas Arthur Bateman was born in Rylstone N.S.W. to Arthur Wigley and Anna Louisa Bateman (nee Kennedy) in 1883. The family moved to Albion Park the early 1890's after having lived in Rylstone and Manly.
Thomas' father was a doctor and had his practice attached to the family home, 'Ravensthorpe', in Albion Park.
Thomas married Violet Ada Bloomfield in 1912 at St. Michaels, Wollongong. Thomas gave his occupation as a gentleman.
In 1913, according to an article, in the Illawarra Mercury, Thomas was returning to his law studies after an illness.
Thomas was involved in the Albion Park community. He was president of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society in 1919 to 1921.
In 1914 he became an alderman in the Shellharbour Council to represent the West Ward and his occupation was a dairy farmer owning Meadow Farm. In 1920, Thomas was elected Mayor until 1922.
Thomas was secretary and treasurer of the local rugby league football club, and part of a group of residents formed to organise the Peace Day celebrations after WWI. Thomas provided a paddock on his farm to hold the War Chest Picnic.
Thomas competed in the horse section at the Albion Park show, winning a prize for his filly. He also competed in the Albion Park Rifleman club.
Thomas grew wheat for winter fodder for his dairy cows with excellent results.
A farewell was held in June 1923 at Albion Park in recognition of his involvement in the community.
In the electoral roll for 1930 he is listed as living with his mother and some of his siblings at 'Coton', Corrimal St. Wollongong.
Thomas and Violet's children were:
John Arthur Buckby Bn. 1913 registered in Wollongong and died on 28th April 1918.
Elizabeth Blomfield Bn.1914 registered in Wollongong, married Thomas A.B.Daiken in 1914. She died in Sydney in 1993.
Violet Mary Daubeny Bn. 1914.registered Kiama unmarried died 2009 Sydney.
Barbara Buckby Bn.1921 registered in Cessnock unmarried died 2014 Sydney.
