He married Agnes King in 1882 and inherited 'The Hill' on his father's death. He was a successful dairy farmer, a foundation member of the Milking Shorthorn Association, and respected judge. He was Director of the Illawarra Cooperative Central Dairy 1918-1919, a member of the board of Dairy Farmers Milk Co, and President of Albion Park A.H.& I. Society 1895-1897 and 1911-1913. He served as Mayor of Shellharbour Municipality in 1896-1897 and 1918-1919. He was also a successful exhibitor of Milking Shorthorn cattle at agricultural shows.
