AddressShellharbour Civic Centre,Shellharbour City CentreDescriptionOn the 27 March 1988, the Tongarra Bicentennial Museum was officially opened by Mr. Patrick Mayes, member of the NSW Bicentennial Council. Mayor Ald. R.J. Harrison M.L.A. welcomed the official party and the large community. Cr. Frank Smithers officiated at the proceedings.

The museum was built by Shellharbour Council from bicentennial grant funding. In 1987, Gay Hendrickson was initially appointed curator by Shellharbour Council to set up and record the artefact collection relevant to the history of Shellharbour.

Soon after the opening, Ald. Erwin Zatschler of Shellharbour Council advertised for volunteers to keep the museum open and other museum activities. Volunteers from the Heritage Society of Shellharbour, were given responsibility of the running of the museum, under a management committee of council representatives and elected community volunteers and honorary curator.

The management committee was dissolved in 1999, and came under the management of Shellharbour City Council.

In 2018 Tongarra Museum moved to its new purpose built home at the Shellharbour Civic Centre and changed its named to Shellharbour City Museum.
