TitleClearing the forest at TongarraPhoto Number000202Date1860-70DescriptionThe clearing lease system began in the district in 1843. Large landowners settled immigrants rent free for six years on about 30 acres of land. The tenants cleared the land, built primitive huts and started farming. The system continued into the 1870s. By that time, many of the immigrants had purchased the properties with profits made from their crops and livestock.LocationTongarra
