He came to Shellharbour on family visits when he was 11yrs old and continued to throughout his life, becoming involved in the sporting community, especially cricket. He played for Shellharbour and the team became known at times, as Dr. Bardsley's team. In the Sand's Directory 1909 he is listed as Dr. E.A. Bardsley and Co. Physician and Surgeon North Sydney. Dr. Bardsley became the patron of the Shellharbour Cricket, Rifle and Surf clubs. He was known for his generous donations to clubs in Shellharbour. On Sunday 5 October 1953 at the launch of the new surf boat for the Shellharbour Surf Club, Alderman Grey unveiled the sign for Bardsley Park to remember the community work of Dr. Bardsey .
