He was a pilot and established Southern Cross Air, operating in the South Coast area. Ben retired in 1949 and moved to 'Clover Hill' with his wife Jean and their English sheep dog, Rover. In the 1970s, the historic 'Clover Hill' homestead burnt down and the NWPS acquired his property as part of Macquarie Pass National Park. Despite all this, Ben built an English Tudor style Manor House known locally as 'Ben's Folly'. It was built around huge rock formations on the property, the rocks forming part of the interior of the building.
